Frequently asked Questions

It is a huge step to place your faith in a  coach and I am sure you have questions to ask. Here are a few that I am frequently asked. if you have others I would be delighted to answer them for you. Contact me today.

What is a life coach?

A Confidence coach is someone who aims to assist and empower clients to shine in all areas of their lives.

Why women 50+? There is a huge disconnect in today’s world and mature woman are facing a different relationship, social and professional world to what they grew up in. Bridging that gap can seem insurmountable.  My strength as a confidence coach comes from my unique blend of professional and experiential skills shared in a caring, supportive, ‘bring in some fun’ factor atmosphere as the client steps up into their new empowered life.

What is the difference between a life coach and a confidence coach?  Confidence is that invisible thread that when it is in place…it enhances every other aspect of your life.  My belief is that if you start with building confidence,  the client gains clarity to make their other life changes. They become excited about making, meeting and exceeding their personal and professional goals at home, in relationships, at play and in their world.

By utilising specialist techniques based on core psychological principles, intuition and personal experience, the coach offers strategies and tools to face difficult situations, push past emotional barriers then see life with fresh, hopeful and enlightened eyes.

Just as a sports coach enables athletes to hone their skills and be successful, confidence coaching helps people from all  backgrounds at any time in their lives to improve their strengths and build on their weaknesses to present the best of themselves in their world.

A confidence coach will never make your decisions for you or tell you what to do. it is not about ‘dishing out advice’ or imposing the coaches personal views on you. . It is about the client making an informed decision and the coach supporting them. Nor is it the role of a coach to be personally  involved in a client’s life. Coaching is about objectivity, structure and empowerment, not instruction or indoctrination.

At the heart of coaching lies the idea that clients are given the power to help themselves. Offering advice, opinions and judgements would undermine some of the basic principals behind life coaching, which include:

A) Empowerment – to empower the client to make the most of their lives. To incorporate the tools into their lives to support their changes. There is no right and wrong way, it is finding the right way for you, the client.

 B) Guidance – there is a difference between instructing and guiding. An instructor tells you what to do and how to do it, a guide provides the strategies  tools  and support for a clients needs to achieve something for themselves.  A coach is a guide…not an instructor.

What happens in a coaching session?

Confidence coaching sessions will typically be for a specific duration, usually  60 minutes (depending on the life coach you choose). Sessions can be conducted over the phone, face to face, over email, via Skype and occasionally through instant messaging.

An initial session to establish your program and build rapport is complimentary.

During the session, your coach will ask you about what you want to get out of life, why you need confidence, cover how you lost it, explore ways to restore it. What areas of your life  you’re unhappy with and where you’d like to see yourself ending up. Although your coach will work with and support you, it’s often up to you to challenge or reflect upon certain ideas to help you move forward with your life. You will never be forced to make any decisions you don’t feel comfortable with and all sessions will be confidential, allowing you to explore your thoughts and feelings privately.

The tools and strategies that you learn and implement are life strategies that will support you through future challenges. The ‘bring in a fun factor’ is a strong strategy for progress.

Confidence coaching is often seen as a partnership between you and your coach, who will gently encourage you to explore how to make positive changes in your life. A coach should also offer support and feedback to help you to stay focused on your goals.

What is NLP?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is thought to be one of the most effective and accessible self-help methods to come from modern psychology. Many life coaches use NLP techniques to help ‘reprogramme’ clients’ patterns of thinking and behaving. To find out more about what NLP is and how it works, LINK

 What is EFT?

EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique, is an easy yet effective method developed by Gary Craig that allows quick release of negative emotions. EFT involves tapping on certain meridian points that communicate energetic information throughout the human body while focused on the emotion we want to release.

You can let go of whatever emotional baggage you’ve been carrying around with you that causes you to overeat, smoke, bite your nails, take drugs, drink and any other self defeating ritual that you take part in.

You can do it anywhere, any time and unlike gym exercises there is no  recovery time needed. Do it as often as you like for as long as you like.

EFT is one amazing tool to deal with your negative emotions and limiting beliefs. A fantastic tool to support your coaching sessions. LINK

How is life coaching different from counselling?

The basic difference between counselling and life coaching is that counselling usually investigates the roots and causes of potential mental health problems, whereas life coaching focuses mainly on the future to encourage personal-development and self-improvement. Life/Confidence coaches are not (unless specified) qualified to diagnose or treat any health-related problems, although if the situation arises they may suggest you see a GP.

What can a confidence coach help me with?

They utilise effective techniques to help their clients in all aspects of life. If you’ve ever struggled with anything – whether it be getting older, feeling invisible as a result, sticking to a diet, learning a language, moving out of your comfort zone, standing up for yourself at work, keeping a stable love life, or achieving those things you always wanted to do (your special ‘bucket-list’), then consulting a life coach could help you.

A confidence coach will approach things pragmatically. Through questions and exercises, he or she will try to get a good idea of how you look at the world. From this they will be able to identify the most effective route to your goal. Some people feel intimidated by the idea of change and so need to take things very slowly to fulfil their goals. In this situation the coach might divide ultimate goals into smaller bite-sized pieces. Other people love change and get impatient and lose interest if their dreams aren’t happening immediately. In this situation the coach might suggest introducing stronger reminders and incentives to keep them on track.

However you approach life, your life coach will be able to tailor your sessions to fit. Subjects life coaches deal with include:

Love life – Do you find it is more difficult in maturity to attract a new partner?  Would you like to have the confidence to approach someone you have your eye on? Are you starting over after the loss of a partner through a relationship breakdown for a death…and feel overwhelmed? Are you struggling to deal with your changed conditions? Whatever the problem, a confidence coach could help you to understand your love-life problems and then work towards rectifying them.
Personal life – Are you asking yourself…is this all there is? Have I missed something? Maybe you feel you are not making the most out of your life. We often lack the confidence, time or will power to move forward and we retreat, hide and do nothing. A confidence coaches uses specialist skills to motivate their clients to do what they want to do so they can fight the urge to procrastinate.
Performance – Self improvement is at the heart of coaching. maybe you are thinking I am 50+ that I can’t do……because I am …….what will others think……what if I make a fool of myself…..you know how the list goes. Whatever your skill, confidence coaching could help you improve it. Whether it is a skill you wish to update or to learn a new skill adopting specialist coaching techniques will help you to push your limitations and exceed expectations.

Business – many women 50+ are finding themselves in a position of needing to upskill in their current employment or to return to the workforce after raising a family or following a relationship breakdown. You may even contemplate starting your own business. Whichever point you are coming from it is tough in the real world, we can get absorbed and neglect to look after ourselves. A confidence coach can help with your confidence, decision making and seeking a balance that is right for you.

Is confidence coaching expensive?

The cost varies greatly from coach to coach. On average you can expect to pay from $80 to $500 a session. Most coaches offer a discount when sessions are booked in bulk and sessions are usually for 60mins.

For my session costs LINK

How many life coaching sessions will I need?

You can have as many or as few confidence coaching sessions as you like. Because many coaches operate over the phone or via the Internet, the sessions can easily fit around your schedule. Some people hire a confidence for a set of 5 sessions for one particular goal,  for 6 months to work on major changes. Other clients are suited to once every few months, others have a session once a week. It is entirely up to you to decide.

How can I tell if a life coach is any good?

Coaching is a very personal choice. Do your research, read testimonials. check credentials, talk to others. Make contact and speak to the coach.

Still, qualifications mean little if you don’t get on with your life coach. Rapport and trust are two of the most important parts of confidence coaching. If you feel uncomfortable with your professional, you are unlikely to gain much from the session. It is therefore advisable to get in contact before you book a session. Never feel obliged to continue if you don’t want to – you should never feel like you are listening to a sales pitch.

What is NLP?

NLP is a specialist technique used by life coaches. NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. ‘Neuro’, Latin for nerve, refers to the way we gather information from the outside world with our five senses. ‘Linguistic’, the study of language, refers to the way we make sense of that information by organising it into the structure of language. ‘Programming’ is a way of controlling something. In this case it refers to the way our interpretations of the world control our actions, choices and behaviours in day-to-day life. NLP teaches us that by changing how we make sense of the world, we can then adjust our behaviours and actions in order to make the most of ourselves and our lives.

By harnessing the power of language, NLP-trained life coaches can break down the mental barriers we all unknowingly create for ourselves over time and habit. NLP is considered by many to be one of the most useful and accessible tools to come from modern psychology. NLP can assist stress management, improve empathy and communication skills, resolve destructive relationship patterns and encourage clients to move out of their comfort zones towards fuller, happier, and infinitely more satisfying lives.

In brief:

Developed in…California, USA in 1972.

Developed by…John Grinder and Richard Bandler. Both were enrolled at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Grinder was an Assistant Professor of linguistics and Bandler was a psychology undergraduate.

Inspired by…

  • Fritz Perls – the psychotherapist who developed Gestalt therapy.
  • Virginia Satir – dubbed the ‘Mother of Family Therapy’
  • Milton Erickson – the first therapist to use hypnosis for medical purposes.

Bandler and Grinder wanted to know: what made these three therapists so good at improving the lives of their clients?

Influenced by…

Gregory Bateson – a British academic famed for his contribution to cybernetics (the science concerned with patterns of communication within natural and mechanical systems) and epistemology (the study of knowledge). Bateson’s influence was thought to drive Bandler and Grinder’s research towards the idea that we can ‘reprogramme’ our minds.

 Understanding NLP

NLP is a vast and complex subject. basically we can break it down into three parts:

  1. Subjectivity – at the heart of NLP lies the understanding that each one of us sees the world in a different light.
  2. Maps – our own worlds are made of boundaries and territories that our life experiences draw out for us.
  3. Language – we have the power to shift and redraw those boundaries using our ‘control systems’, the most influential of which is language.

How do confidence coaches use NLP?

We convey meaning in a wide variety of ways – through tone, pitch, volume, facial expression, body language and words. Coaches trained in NLP techniques pick up on  these subtle clues that give away how the client is feeling. Their ‘map of the world’ shows and the coach can then identify self imposed restrictions then help to challenge them.

Our main limiting beliefs are thought to be:

·         worthlessness

·         hopelessness

·         helplessness

When you think ‘I am not good enough’ or ‘others are better than me’ – it sets you up for failure, that limits your experiences and accomplishments.

Questions are a great way to reveal the thoughts that cause the limiting beliefs such as:

·         Why do you feel so undeserving of happiness and confidence?

·         Why cant’ you feel confident?

·         What is preventing your confidence from shining?

How can NLP help?

Because it is essentially a tool-kit for the mind, NLP can help all areas of life. It is particularly effective for improving the following situations:

Anxiety and stress

The problem with anxiety is that it can often feel irrational – you know you shouldn’t feel anxious, you might even know you don’t need to feel anxious, but you do. So how can you possibly stop it?

NLP is an effective method for fighting feelings of stress and anxiety because it identifies the thought patterns that lead to those feelings. As soon as these unconscious thought patterns are bought out into the light and made conscious, they can be challenged.

Arts and creativity

Writer’s or ‘artist’s block’ or any creative skill is something that affects most creative spirits at some point. Sometimes, it simply becomes impossible to adequately express what you want to express. An NLP session could be used to identify what is creating that block. Your confidence may develop exercises for you to complete, designed to unleash and channel the energy you’ve been storing up.

Fears and phobias

Like with anxiety and stress, NLP is great for revealing the thought processes behind what we might consider ‘irrational’ behaviour. Really, no behaviour is completely irrational – we are products of our pasts and something along the way will have kick-started those fears. NLP can help to change the thoughts and feelings we have about the things that scare us so that we no longer have to avoid them.

Health and wellbeing

One of the most important ideas underpinning NLP is that the mind and body are closely and intricately connected. By improving the way we approach and think about the world, we can effect the health and wellbeing of our bodies.

Relationships

Relationships are based on how we communicate with each other. How we communicate depends on the kind of people we are and the ways we view the world. We all have what we might consider ‘bad character traits’ that have the unfortunate habit of ruining relationships. This could include being argumentative, distrustful, jealous, insecure and so on. NLP can help you become more aware of how you communicate. It can help you to understand that other people might have different views of the world and that your way of thinking is not necessarily right. Developing empathy skills can make it easier to build strong and lasting relationships – whether they be with friends, family members, or lovers.

What is EFT?

EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique, is an easy yet effective method developed by Gary Craig that allows quick release of negative emotions. EFT involves tapping on certain meridian points that communicate energetic information throughout the human body while focused on the emotion we want to release.

Energetic Information?
When our bodies feel any negative emotion it is directly caused by a “glitch” in our bodies Energy System. This “glitch” carries with it what seems in some cases to be the weight of the world. Past experiences and traumatic events stay with us long after the experience is gone. The negative emotions we feel after that event occurs can linger on and shape our thought processes for the future. This “new” thought process we learn after something unfavorable happens to us can lead to a life time of stress and anxiety and a whole host of other negative emotions that we know do not serve us in any way.

These negative emotions can keep us stuck in our lives unable to reach the next level of where we want to be. They can actually manifest illness and unexplained aches and pains in our bodies that hinder the quality of our lives. They can cause us to turn to bad habits like smoking, over eating, drinking, drugs, gambling, nail biting and other nervous behaviors that only cause more damage to our bodies. This happens because of the body’s inability to fully deal with the emotion that started it all.

With EFT you can rid yourself of these negative emotions. Whatever they are, whatever they’ve caused. In the process of getting rid of the emotion you can also alleviate the physical symptoms as well.

EFT is used virtually on anything that ails you, the list is long and continues to grow.

Be prepared to bring more happiness, joy, peace, ABUNDANCE and PROSPERITY, and overall wellness in to your life.

You owe it to your body.

So How Can EFT Help?

EFT can literally realign your Energy System by a few very easy and painless tapping motions on various Energy Meridians in your body. Once complete, often times you’ll feel 100% relief from whatever was bothering you. Sometimes you’ll need to do subsequent rounds of EFT (especially for more serious conditions).

You can let go of whatever emotional baggage you’ve been carrying around with you that causes you to overeat, smoke, bite your nails, take drugs, drink and any other self defeating ritual that you take part in.

You can do it anywhere, any time and unlike gym exercises there is no  recovery time needed.

EFT is one amazing tool to deal with your negative emotions and limiting beliefs. A fantastic tool to support your coaching sessions.
